The Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall recognised the hard work Penryn’s mayor has put in for the local sea cadet group.

Councillor Gill Grant was delighted to receive Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant’s Certificate for Meritorious Service at a ceremony at the Alverton Hotel in Truro.

In a citation from the Wessex Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association, the chairman, Oliver Chamberlain, said: “Her enthusiasm, dedication and commitment are at the |heart of Training Ship Robert Hichens. Her personal easy-going style and friendly manner endear her to everyone and the result is an extremely |happy and cohesive unit.

“She gives her all and seeks no reward or recognition save taking great pleasure from the success of the cadets.”

Councillor Grant has been the chairman of the unit management team of the sea cadet unit Training Ship Robert Hichens, in Commercial Road, Penryn since 2005.

During her time as chairman, she has raised funds for a mini-bus, a sea-going RIB and trailer, and over £85,000 for a new roof and internal refurbishment.

Penryn town clerk Michelle Davey said: “I was very pleased to hear of Councillor Grant’s award. I would endorse everything that Oliver Chamberlain says in his citation, as Councillor Grant applies the same enthusiasm and can-do positive attitude to her work as mayor, which is an enormous help to me personally, and of great benefit to the residents of Penryn.”
