Councillors have given a sign of their respect to a former chairman who retired from Mabe council in 2013 after 44 years.

Following half a lifetime on the council, including two years as chairman and three as vice chairman, George Kingston, 86, has seen his name immortalised on a sign for the new road Kingston Way, on a housing development off Treliever Road.

George said: “I wish to thank the chairman of the council Andrew Thomas, and fellow councillors, for their proposal to Cornwall Council in naming the road Kingston Way on the new housing complex off Treliever Road.

“I very much appreciate this and consider it a great honour, and would like to thank the members of the public for their wonderful support over the years.”

As well as being a long serving councillor, Gweal Darras resident George was also a verger at St Laudus Church, and one of the founders of the Mabe Youth and Community Project and of the annual Mabe Shindig.
