Last week an ornamental cherry tree was planted to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Helston Community Hospital’s League of Friends and this week the friends planted a copper beech tree to commemorate the outbreak of World War One.

The tree had been donated by Penny Truscott and was planted in a ceremony conducted in the pouring rain.

Following on from that, at a LOF committee meeting, Neil Wilson, a health care worker at the hospital shared with members the plans he and matron Lynda McHale, have to put on a candlelight vigil and service of remembrance.

The event will take place on December 7 from 7pm until 9pm when there will be a multi faith service of remembrance which will start at the site of the old memorial, part of the community hospital. All are welcome and invited to bring any battery operated tea light for the vigil.

The committee had a longer than usual meeting with a look back at the year in preparation for its AGM on November 24, and looking forward to the forties dance at the Godolphin club on Friday, November 21 at 7pm when fancy dress is optional. Tickets will be available on the door or at reception at the hospital.

The treasurer, Sue Atkins reported that an accusonic Advantage Ultrasound to help patients with Parkinson's disease and MS had been ordered as had a recumbent static bicycle for the day room and four wheel chairs.

Requests have been made for scales which can be attached to a hoist which would enable the weight of less mobile patients to be monitored. The committee agreed to purchase this.

and was pleased to hear that the “Cricket”, a transferring hoist used for demonstrations to patients and their families and carers, had arrived and would soon be in use.
