A campaign has been launched to keep the 'last bank' open in St Agnes.

St Agnes residents’ are asking bosses at the banking behemoth, which saw underlying profits soar to £5.2bn in 2013, to change its mind after it announced that they will be closing the St Agnes Branch on Friday, February 20.

As well as the branch closing, the cash machine will also be lost.

MP Sarah Newton is supporting the bid to keep the bank open after being contacted by local residents who are "angered and dismayed" by the decision.

She said Tthe closing of the St Agnes Branch goes against Barclays’ pledge not to close branches where it is the "last bank in town", and that it makes even less sense when you take into account the expense of the recent refit, redecoration and overhaul at this branch.

She said: "The closure of the St Agnes Branch will be a huge loss to its local customers whether they are individuals, businesses or the many local groups and organisations who depend on its valued existence in the heart of our community.

"Our community and population grows ever bigger and the St Agnes Bank and its cash point are well used by them, as well as the many holiday makers and visitors to St Agnes that the community depends upon."

"St Agnes needs this branch to stay open and I will be doing everything possible to help local people and businesses make the case to Barclays to change their minds."

If anyone (customers and individuals) wants to express their thoughts regarding this Barclays Bank closure letters may be addressed to: Mr Michael Watts Community Leader Cornwall & Devon Area or Chief Executive Anthony Jenkins, both via the St Agnes Barclays Bank, 48 Vicarage Rd, St Agnes TR5 0TG.

Please send a copy to Sarah Newton MP, 18 Lemon Street, Truro TR1 2LZ, so she has all the information needed to support the case for keeping the branch open.
