A rock and roll legend from the 1950s has delighted the crowds in Helston at a fundraising concert for Cornwall Air Ambulance.

Charlie Gracie, who sang alongside the likes of Eddie Cochran and had five top 40 UK hits, including Wanderin’ Eyes, took to the stage at the Godolphin Club in front of a packed room.

Charlie was the headline act in the concert that also featured the Ron Barrett Trio, The Pistoleros from Falmouth and ladies a cappella group No Apologies.

DJ Freddy Zapp was compere, with Matt Shepherd overseeing an auction for a handmade guitar by Trevor Williamson of Carnoustie, Scotland and signed by Charlie Gracie, to help boost the total further. There was also a raffle of donated prizes.

A net total of £2,065.97 will now be donated to the Air Ambulance.

Guy Mackenzie, who helped organise the event with The Guitar Collection, said: “I’m absolutely delighted. It went far better than anything I could have anticipated. The club said it was the biggest event it had had for 20 years.”

The concert marked a date on 78-year-old Charlie’s tour of the UK and he has already indicated his desire to return next year.
