Drugs which a 32-year-old Falmouth man bought for £240 were worth £800 when police officers checked them, Truro magistrates heard.
Warren Ashley Bayliss, of St Nazaire Close, told officers he had bought the five ounces of cannabis, found when officers searched his home, at a competitive price as the seller had been desperate for money.
He said the drugs would last him a month as he had a fairly substantial habit.
Bayliss, who pleaded guilty to possessing the illegal cannabis, had now given up drugs altogether his solicitor Curtis Lewis said. He had previous convictions.
Bayliss was fined £90 and £80 costs and surcharge.
