Children at Falmouth’s primary schools are being invited to come up with a name for a new daffodil which will be shown publicly for the first time at the Falmouth Spring Flower Show next March.

Daffodil grower Ron Scamp, an exhibitor who has now taken over as the show’s president, gave samples of an un-named daffodil to the town’s schoolchildren for them to grow in time for the show. He has also invited them to name the new variety.

He said: “The new daffodil has been at least ten years in production and has now reached the stage where it needs a name to be registered with the Royal Horticultural Society. It is short stemmed, has yellow petals and an orange trumpet.

“I am delighted the children are doing this as they are the show’s exhibitors of the future. The name will be selected and a certificate presented at the show.”

The deadline for entries to name the daffodil has been extended to December 12 with entry forms available from the schools or from Jacqui Owen at Gyllyngdune Gardens.

Next year’s spring show, on March 21 and 22, will also include a new class aimed at encouraging youngsters to get involved. The Youth Group Challenge for 12 to 16-year-olds at schools, youth groups and clubs has a new cup, the Princess Pavilion and Gyllyngdune Garden Youth Cup. It has been donated by Tempus Leisure who are sponsoring the 2015 Falmouth Spring Festival. The themes for the first Youth Group Challenge exhibit include a Cornish engine house garden.

As well as a new president, appointed following the retirement of Oliver Carne who becomes an honorary vice-president, the show has a new chairman, Reg Sleeman (show director for the past 35 years); Penryn councillor David Garwood joins as show director and there are two new committee members, Phil Hart and Bernadette Snow.

Committee member Jean Carr said: “This is a show in which everyone can take part . You do not need to know the name of your best camellia. If it’s your best flower just share it with us. Non gardeners can bring their pot plants and favourite house plant. There are 11 children’s classes, six photography classes and floral art challenges. There are no entry fees and children under 16 get into the show days free as do all exhibitors.”
