A candlelight vigil will take place at Helston Community Hospital today (Saturday) for those from the area who lost their lives during World War One.

Taking place between 7pm and 9pm, there will be a procession, multi-faith service and planting of poppy crosses, followed by refreshments.

Helston Community Hospital matron Lynda McHale said: “We have worked very closely with the local community and have found that there were 62 people who lost their lives in the Helston and the Lizard area during World War One.

“We have a poppy cross for each person which will then be put into our sensory garden at the end of the service.”

Those attending are encouraged to bring a battery operated tea-light for the vigil.

It has been organised with the support of the hospital’s League of Friends, which recently held its 60th anniversary annual general meeting.

After reports from officers, and elections for the coming year, thanks were given to the community, hospital staff and committee members for their support.

Sandra Wilderspin, from Godolphin, then gave a talk on the life that led her eventually to become head of a school in Kathmandu and to the charity work with which she and her pupils were involved.

In 2012 she was made an MBE for her services as chairman of International British Schools Worldwide.
