An elderly man has died in hospital after a car left the road and hit a hedge in Penzance on Saturday.

Police are investigating the circumstances of the collision that saw a black Skoda Superb leave the carriageway and hit a hedge at the end of Gwavas Lane in the Paul area of the town.

Paramedics treated the driver, a 76-year-old man from Looe, at the scene shortly before 8.15pm on Saturday (December 13).

The man was then taken to Treliske Hospital, Truro, where he died.

Officers are investigating if the driver of the car suffered a medical episode before the collision. No other vehicles were involved in the collision.

The 64-year-old female passenger, who suffered minor injuries, was also taken to hospital.

The road was closed for just over seven hours to enable a forensic investigation of the scene to take place and the road surface to be cleaned by Highways.

Anyone who witnessed the collision, or the car shortly beforehand, is asked to call the Bodmin Serious Collisions Investigation Unit on 101 quoting log 777 of 13 December.
