Falmouth’s mayor John Body was among visitors to an open day and Christmas fair held at the town’s AgeUK Day Centre on Friday.

Mr Body mingled with day centre clients and visitors before officially opening a brand new sensory room.

He congratulated the facility’s management on the room’s transformation and had a special word of praise for centre worker Victoria Drummond who did much of the painting and design work.

The day raised a staggering £1,400 for centre funds. The main raffle prize, a £30 Tesco voucher, was won by Age UK help line advisor Emma Williams and a cake stall, selling various food items made by the centre’s cook, Marlene Emmett, made £600.

Centre manager, Lucy Downing, described the event as “an amazing success” and offered thanks to her staff, the team of volunteers and everyone who donated items for the sales stalls.

Lucy said that her team’s next project was to create a games room. They were currently looking for painters to help and for items such as a pool table, a wall-mounted television, games, a leather sofa and other chairs.

“Fundraising is already underway but offers of help will be much appreciated,” she added.
