Passers by would have been forgiven for thinking there was a major incident at Penryn Primary School recently as all four emergency services visited year six pupils.

An ambulance, fire engine, police car and RNLI truck, complete with trailer and jet-ski, all parked in the school playground to help the children learn about the work of the various agencies and how they help people.

The visit was arranged as part of the year 6 module on heroes and villains, which up to now had been focused on superheroes, and the school felt that the children should learn a little more about the heroes in their own community.

Deputy headteacher Janice Eddy said: “We invited in real life heroes to show how they serve the community. All the children are very engaged, asking lots of questions.

“Some of the children have shared that they want to join the police or the ambulance service as a vocation as well.”

Although the visit was only intended for the year 6 pupils, everybody was able to stay on longer than planned, meaning that the experience was opened up to children from the rest of the school as well.

Mrs Eddy said: “All the children are absolutely delighted to take part in this activity this morning. They have been engaged, interested, and asked lots of questions.”

One of the year 6 pupils, Issy, added: “It’s been really exciting, and they have lots of cool gadgets.”
