A bakery firm, currently based at Pool, is hoping to open a branch in Helston.

Cornish Oven, which already has branches in Illogan and Camborne and runs seven sandwich vans, wants to convert an empty building in Clodgey Lane, which was previously used for sales.

Cornish Oven hopes to open a takeaway, which will have a new shopfront, chiefly selling pasties but also offering cakes and coffee.

An application for planning permission for the “bakery”, PA14/10501, has been made by owner Giles Williams.

It has so far received one comment on the Cornwall Council website, from Martine Knight, who claimed there had been “no communication” with neighbouring homes, and there was no indication of days and times of operation.

She said: “The production at bakeries usually starts very early in the morning and, if this is the case, I object on the basis of extra noise disturbance and impact on the local community both from the production process and from any vehicles servicing the premises.”

Mrs Knight also listed concerns of noise levels of the ventilation system and an increase in traffic to the site, both from customers and service vehicles.

“The application states that there are 30 car spaces and 20 motorcycle spaces, but this would only be true if the car sales business adjacent was being closed down. “There is no indication of this being so and, therefore, the only spaces available to this business would be approximately four car spaces,” she added.

Finally, she objected to what she described as “scaffold type” signage being placed at the roadside, which she said was “already over cluttered.”

Mr Williams said the term “bakery” was “a little misleading”, saying it was more of a pasty shop that would be open between 7am and 6pm.

He added that the next door car sales area was going to be reduced to allow for “ample parking and manoeuvring.”

Mr Williams told the Packet: “My intention is to build a shop that Helston can be proud of and improve on the site as a whole. I’m more than happy to meet Mrs Knight to explain my plans.”
