Residents at Poldhu Nursing Home may not be able to get out and about to attend Christmas events – but this year the festivities came to them.

The whole of Cury Primary School visited the home last week, to perform a play and bring festive cheer to the elderly residents.

The children performed a modern take on a traditional nativity, which took the form of a jigsaw puzzle and the different elements slotting together.

The message was that Christmas was not about the gifts, but about the birth of Jesus.

Sue Giles, activity co-ordinator at the home, said: “It was wonderful. The play had a lovely twist to it.”

Around 42 children packed into the living room of the home to perform and Sue said the residents “absolutely loved it”, adding: “They’re not able to get out to see things like that, so we bring it to them instead.”

The home has strong links to the school, which has been visiting for the last six years.

As a treat for their hard work, the home had arranged for a surprise visit from Father Christmas for the children.

Despite a minor mishap with his beard, the man in the red suit was able to greet all the children and present them with a small gift.

Sue said: “The children had no idea he was going to be there. When the children turned around he was sat in the chair behind them.”

She described the whole event as “a really lovely day,” adding: “It started all our Christmas festivities off really well. Thank you to the children for coming.”
