Young performers at Porthleven Primary School staged both a traditional nativity and an alternative take on the Christmas story last week.

For the nursery and reception children it was time to don the habitual sheets and tea towels – although these days costumes are a more professional affair – for their play of Mary and Joseph needing room at the inn, and being visited by the shepherds and kings.

Youngsters in class one and two took a different approach for their production of The Apprentice.

This was based on the traditional story, but told of a carpenter from Bethlehem needing an apprentice. A young girl called Sarah seemed an unlikely candidate but soon proved her worth.

A school spokesperson said: “All the children absolutely loved it. It was lovely to see them all. It makes you feel very Christmasy.”

Both plays were performed last Tuesday and Wednesday, with an afternoon and an evening performance on each day, delighting family members and friends.
