More patients will now be able to get treatment at Falmouth Hospital thanks to fundraising by a local running club.

The Mile High Running Club handed over money to the Friends of Falmouth Hospital which they had raised to pay for infusion pumps which should increase the number of patients the hospital can help.

Members of the club ran a sponsored road relay from St Mawes castle to Pendennis Castle, with the runners travelling in pairs on a course that covered the hilly terrain through Tregony, Tresillian, Pencalenick, Truro Playing Place, Point, Devoran, Mylor, Penryn and Falmouth on a wet August afternoon.

The event ended in the grounds of Pendennis Castle with a total distance covered of over 54 miles in just over five hours.

Money from sponsorship was added to by nurses collecting along the seafront and a contribution from Barclays Bank, for a total of £4029.

Nigel Druce, chairman of the friends, said: “This is a magnificent effort by the runners and we can’t thank them enough for contributing so well to efforts to increase the number of people who can be cared for in our hospital.”

David Collins of the Mile High Club said: “Everyone in Falmouth values having our own hospital and the running club was very pleased that the event raised so much money for such an important cause in order that more people can be treated near where they live.”

The Mile High Club and Friends of Falmouth hospital thanked everyone who supported the event.
The next target for the friends group is to raise £10,000 in funds to reopen a closed ward in the hospital.
