The people of Coverack enjoyed “perfect” conditions as they took a midwinter dip for the annual Christmas charity swim.

Around 140 swimmers headed into the chilly sea at Coverack harbour on a windless Christmas Day to raise over £1,200 for Cancer Research.

At around 12.30pm the hardy souls who took part were led across the harbour at low tide and into the water by Dave Philpott, Joan Kiersley, and Carol Lawrence.

Carol, the chair of St Keverne and Coverack Cancer Research committee, said: “It was fantastic. The weather was perfect, there was no wind.

“Usually when people get a little bit wet the wind is chilly and everyone shivers but it was great this year.”

She said she thought it was possibly a record turnout for the event, with money collected from sponsorship yet to be collected and counted, and with hundreds of spectators on the harbour side and in the local pub donating £1,286 to collectors on the day.

She added: “It was a lovely atmosphere, people were stood outside and the pub was packed.”

She thanked Hugh Richards, who opened the fisherman's rest and lit the fire for participants to get changed, and Pippa Englefield who provided mulled wine for swimmers after the event, as well as the people who collected and helped count the money.
