Police have launched an investigation after an elderly couple from Helston were left with serious injuries after a Redruth crash.

Officers are appealing for witnesses after a silver Ford B-Max travelling up Buller Hill on the B3297, heading out of the town, was involved in a collision with a silver Peugeot 306 and a white Leyland DAF lorry at around 5.30pm on Friday.

The two elderly occupants of the Ford B-Max, from Helston, were trapped in their vehicle.

They were cut free from the car by the fire service and taken by ambulance to the Royal Cornwall Hospital, Treliske, in Truro.

The 80-year-old male driver is reported to be suffering from serious chest injuries.

The occupants of the other vehicles, registered to Redruth, were not injured.

The road was closed for six hours while the lorry was being recovered.

Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to call the Serious Collisions Investigation Unit, based in Camborne, on 101, quoting log 527 of 9 January.
