Work on a £3.27 million improvement scheme around Carkeel Roundabout on the A38 is set to start next week

Carkeel Roundabout is located approximately half a mile to the west of the Saltash Tunnel in Cornwall. Work includes improving the westbound approach and exit at the roundabout and installing a pedestrian footbridge on the A38.

Work starts on the night of Monday, 26 January and will continue until the Spring.

Highways Agency south west director, Andrew Page-Dove said, “The Carkeel Junction suffers from congestion and subsequent delays in particular on the A38 westbound approach in peak periods.

“We are widening the westbound approach from two to three lanes and widening the westbound exit to allow for a two lane exit. We are also going to install a pedestrian footbridge on the A38 eastern arm.

“By doing this we can improve traffic flows and reduce overall queue lengths at the roundabout and achieve wider benefits in supporting growth in the surrounding area, such as development at Carkeel and Saltash.”

The works are one of 14 Highways Agency pinch point schemes taking place in the South West.

The pinch point programme provides smaller scale improvements that can deliver big returns by easing congestion and making journey times more reliable for road users as well as helping to boost local economies and drive economic growth.

The initial phase of the work to the clear the site will not impact on road users but narrow lanes, lane closures and the occasional overnight full closures will be required from the beginning of February for the safety of road users and our workforce.

Updates will be issued throughout the works.
