Campaigners battling to get the open space at Bosvale in Falmouth designated as a village green are preparing to make a last ditch attempt next week, and are appealing for help from local residents.

In the summer of 2013, Kathryn Philpott, acting on behalf of local residents, applied to Cornwall Council to have the land added to the register of town and village greens, claiming the area had been used as an asset by the community for more than 20 years.

This came as a reaction to plans by the Rotary Club of Falmouth and the Abbeyfield Society to build 75 apartments for the elderly and a new community centre for the Bosvale Community Association on the land.

Town and county councillor, Alan Jewell has been supporting the residents’ campaign, but admitted this week that the initial application had been rejected so it all rests on next Wednesday’s meeting with Cornwall Council officers.

“Myself and Kathryn will be going over and making representations, but if anyone has any information regarding that piece of land and how it has been used over the years, they should contact me.

“It is an important green space and even more-so now that the extra houses are being built on the oil tanks with no real big play area. When you look over there, there was all green but now it’s all going to be houses.”

Once the residents’ case has been put before the officers, those opposing the application will get their chance to have their say. Anyone who has information that could help support the case is asked to email councillor Jewell at ajewell@cornwall.gov.uk as soon as possible.
