Penryn College will be working with the Falmouth Dementia Action Alliance to raise awareness of the condition among young people and their families.

The college held its academic review day last week, and invited the alliance to display information about the group and opportunities that are available to those living with the disease.

A spokesperson said: “The college will be using ‘dementia champions’ to offer free ‘dementia friends' sessions to staff, parents and students in order to raise awareness of dementia, and to ensure that young people are informed about measures that can be taken to reduce risk of future development of dementia.

“Information is given about how to recognise signs of problems that may need a little help, and how to assist. The aim is to eliminate stigma and to equip the community with knowledge and empathy, enabling people to live well in our community, despite their disability.”

Other local schools are engaged in similar programmes run by the FDAA, a collection of more than 200 local businesses that joined together in 2013, along with Penryn and Falmouth Town councils and Mylor Parish Council.

Currently, those members are being asked to confirm their commitment, and those who did not join at that time are being asked to join for free.

Dementia friends sessions are available free to groups both large and small, and last about 30 to 45 minutes.
