Falmouth’s lifeboats had a busy end to January with three call-outs in six days for the volunteer crews.

At about 10.15am on Saturday, January 24, the all weather lifeboat launched to help the 42 foot charter fishing boat Wave Chieftain which had reported engine problems off Porthoustock.

The lifeboat found the fishing boat, which had nine people on board, at around 10.40am.

An RNLI spokesperson said: “The Wave Chieftain had dropped its anchor and had managed to regain some power so once the lifeboat was on scene the boat recovered its anchor and escorted by the lifeboat made its way back towards the entrance to the harbour and then up the Carrick Roads to Mylor Harbour.”

There were then two shouts in a few minutes for the volunteer crewmembers on Friday, January 30.

At 8.14am the all weather lifeboat was called to evacuate an injured fisherman from the 23 metre French fishing vessel Sailfort, which was headed towards Falmouth from the English Channel where it had been fishing.

An RNLI spokesperson said: “The fisherman had suffered an injury to his hand and having obtained medical advice over the radio the fishing boat was asked to head towards Falmouth where the Coastguard would arrange for him to be taken off by the lifeboat.”

He was taken to Falmouth, and transferred to the ambulance by 9.30am.

Meanwhile, at 8.17am the inshore lifeboat had been called by Falmouth Coastguard to investigate reports of a yacht aground on the rocks below the sailing club at New Quay in Flushing.

Upon arrival, the crew found a 28 foot yacht which had broken its mooring and, finding that it was hard aground with no one on board, the lifeboat returned to station.
