Two days of free workshops will be offering families the chance to get creative in Helston this half term.

The first two sessions at the CAST building in Penrose Road (the former community centre) will take place tomorrow, Saturday, when there will be pinhole camera making between 10am and 1pm, and again between 2pm and 5pm.

Led by artist William Arnold, people can make working pinhole cameras from any lightproof container, such as a tin or box, and then use them to produce prints on traditional photographic paper developed in the CAST darkroom.

The workshop is an introduction to the traditional photographic process and is aimed specifically at those with little or no experience of this type of photography.

The minimum age is ten years old.

The second workshop will be held the following Saturday (February 21) with sessions again at 10am until 1pm and 2pm until 5pm.

Artists Jesse Leroy Smith, a multi-media artist based in Newlyn who teaches printmaking at Falmouth University, and Sally Cole, an experienced printmaker from Helston, will provide an introduction to printmaking with no previous experience of art techniques necessary.

Families can create metal or card plates that are inscribed or stencilled, which are then inked up in a range of colours, producing diverse images and effects.

People should wear old clothes or an apron, as the inks are oil-based. They can also bring reference material to draw from, such as photos or drawings, or work from objects in the Helston Museum or the views from the CAST building.

The minimum age is eight years old. For all sessions, under-14s must be accompanied by an adult and spaces are limited to 12 per session, with booking essential.

For the pinhole workshop email William Arnold at williamlawrencearnold@gmail.com and for printmaking email Jesse Leroy Smith at malvern@blue-earth.co.uk In both cases specify whether you would like to attend the morning or afternoon session.

All materials will be provided and the workshops are free, although donations towards material costs would be appreciated.

The workshops come as CAST continues its crowd-funding campaign, A Hearth for Helston, to raise £5,000 in order to buy and install a wood-burning stove in the café area.

It would mean more workshops, talks, screenings and other public activities could be held there.
