Students from Penryn College, and Helston Community College were among those finding out about life working in the hospitality industry recently.

They were joined by fellow pupils from Pool Academy for a day of activities at the Budock Vean Hotel, near Mawnan Smith.

The 'Have a Go at Hospitality Day' gave them a chance to experience everything from housekeeping, where they learned how to make beds and how to check rooms, to running the dining room, where they laid tables and folded napkins.

In the kitchen they had a go at decorating desserts. In addition they learned about customer service by taking part in reception roleplays.

The event was organised by Cornwall Learning Education Business Partnership and Tourism Skills Cornwall.

Kate Whetter, education projects manager at Cornwall Learning Education Business Partnership, said: “The Budock Vean Hotel Have a Go at Hospitality day was a fantastic opportunity for the students to experience the hospitality industry first hand. The management at the Budock Vean Hotel are to be congratulated for the effort and detail in putting this programme together and making the students so welcome.”

Martin Barlow, manager director of The Budock Vean Hotel, said: “We are delighted to welcome young people from local schools to the Budock Vean. It is a good opportunity for them to find out more about the hospitality industry. This is an important industry for Cornwall and it provides an excellent career opportunity for young people. We hope the day has inspired some to pursue a career in our industry.”
