There was nothing half-baked about the latest fundraising event at Porthleven’s Atlantic Inn.

Each year the pub hosts a “bake off”, challenging locals to enter their best bread, cakes and other baked goods.

This is usually held in aid of Children’s Hospice South West, specifically the Little Harbour hospice at St Austell, but this year proceeds were split with Porthleven’s skate park project.

Equipment had to be removed from the park at Methleigh Bottoms at the end of last year, due to wear and tear damage making it a health and safety risk.

Now a committee, led by chairman Naomi Osmond, has been set up to replace the ramps and other equipment that was so popular with young people in the port – at a cost of between £70,000 and £80,000.

Porthleven Town Council has already pledged £20,000, with Cornwall Councillor Andy Wallis agreeing to sort out another £5,000.

There are also other grants being applied for, but a large chunk has to be raised by people from Porthleven.

The community, however, has rallied behind it and a number of events have already been held including by Porthleven Surf Club and recently the Out of the Blue restaurant.

The committee itself is planning an afternoon and evening event on Easter Saturday, April 4, with six bands already lined up and various activities for youngsters in the pipeline.

The bake off was the latest fundraiser, which resulted in £542 being split equally between the hospice and skate park.

Naomi said: “It’s great. It’s really good to have all the local businesses onboard and supporting.

“Thank you to the Atlantic Inn and everyone that support it, including all the businesses that gave prizes, and thanks to everybody that helped.”

Shona Golden was in charge of finding prizes for a well-stocked raffle and auction, encouraging local businesses to donate.

Judges for the evening were Nicky Strike of N&N Cakes, Sandra Kelynack from the An Mordros Hotel and Atlantic Inn chefs James Langley and Chris Slade.

Leigh Santi, landlady of the Atlantic Inn, who organised the event, was also pleased with the result – in particular the 27 different items that were entered across the various categories.

These included classes for the best Victoria Sponge, the best bread and one simply called “express yourself.”

She added: “We were very happy; we were well represented in all the different categories.”

The skate park has its own Facebook group, called Porthleven Skate Park Project, where anybody willing to help out with the fundraising, or organise an event, can get in touch.
