A group of children from Porthleven School got to practise their banter as they took on the role of market traders in Helston last Friday.

The four children, from years one and two, together with former pupil Jared, 14, were just a few of the people to take advantage of the new Barclays’ Community Support initiative, which aims to offer local businesses, schools, start-up traders and community groups the opportunity to use their facilities for pop-up enterprises.

As part of their fundraising activities the children donned “Del Boy style clobber” and took on the role of the infamous market trader from the classic sitcom Only Fools and Horses, selling their wares on a pop-up market stall inside the bank reception in Helston.

But, rather than selling knock-off gear, their stall was filled with a splendid array of goodies including arts and crafts, sweets and flowerpots, most of which had been hand-crafted by the young entrepreneurs.

The popularity of the stall was evident, with the young Del Boys raising an impressive £70 in two hours alone. The money will be used to open a Barclays saving account for the children, which will be used to fund future activities and treats.

Leigh Yates, chair of Porthleven School PTA, said: “It was a great opportunity for the children to take part in the initiative.”

She said that she would like to give a special thanks to Barclays for their “wonderful support” in encouraging the children’s entrepreneurial skills, adding |that they all really enjoyed being market traders and being out |in the community.
