Gweek Players will be performing the popular play On Golden Pond, made famous as a film starring Henry Fonda and Katherine Hepburn.

The play, by Ernest Thompson, will take to the stage from Wednesday, March 18 to Friday, March 20 at 7.30pm, with a matinee show on Saturday, March 21 at 2.30pm at Gweek Village Hall.

Billed as funny, witty and moving, the play follows the love story of Ethel and Norman Thayer, a retired professor, nearing 80, with heart palpitations and a failing memory—but still as tart-tongued, observant and eager for life as ever.

Ethel, ten years younger and the perfect foil for Norman, delights in all the small things that have enriched and continue to enrich their long life together.

"This is a lovely play," said director Hanna Blake. "Norman says the most outrageous things, partly because he might be in the very early stages of dementia, but he is also very witty and amusing. His life is turned around by the arrival of his daughter's 13 year old stepson who deals with him brilliantly and gives his life new hope.”

“Having to work with actors aged 13 to 70 has been a challenge," said Hanna who is herself only 22. "But we have all really enjoyed the experience."

In a new move, the local pub in Gweek, The Black Swan, are offering a pre-theatre meal.

"Main course only," said Vanda Trotman the group's chair. "Don't forget that you get your dessert for free in the interval at Gweek!"

Tickets cost £8 and £9, including the interval dessert, with further details available from 0845 094 8874, www.gweekplayers.co.uk and at Heathercraft in Helston.
