Children from schools and playgroups from across the area ditched school uniforms in favour of costumes depicting their favourite book or film characters on World Book Day on Thursday.

At St Mary's School in Falmouth, the pupils all came in costume and were invited to take part in a book swap when they were able to trade reading material with classmates.

Penryn Primary Academy also invited pupils, and staff, to dress up and turned it into a competition with two children from each year group being rewarded with a £5 voucher after it was decided they had the best costumes.

Falmouth Primary Academy held various workshops throughout the day and at Trelowan PreSchool in Penryn the youngsters enjoyed story time with their parents and then tucked into a cream tea at snack, swapping the tea for milk.

The toddlers at the Crypt Pre-School in Falmouth left their usual surroundings for the town's library where they too enjoyed a story telling session with library staff.

At Penryn College, World Book Day saw teachers dress up with students taking part in a “drop everything and read” initiative. Staff had decided to dress up to help promote the day to the students, with their characters ranging from Oliver Twist, to Where's Wally?

There was plenty going on during the day, including book swaps, fundraising competitions for best staff costumes and book quote competitions among students. At 3pm all students were encouraged to “drop everything and read” for the final 15 minutes of the day, which was well observed by all students.
