The annual celebration of books was enjoyed by pupils across the Helston and Lizard area when they marked World Book Day last week.

At St Michael’s School not only did pupils dress up as characters, with staff also joining in. This led to the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland and Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz teaching a diverse range of book heroes and heroines – plus a few from films – such as Little Red Riding Hood, Robin Hood, Superman and of course Elsa from Frozen.

With World Book Day falling on St Piran’s Day this year, children at schools in the Keskowethyans Multi Academy Trust took the opportunity for a double celebration and linked the two.

Pupils at Coverack and St Martin dressed as their favourite book characters, while Grade-Ruan and St Keverne children dressed as characters from their favourite Cornish story.

Everyone was asked to bring in a copy of their book to share with the other children.

There were pirates, piskies, faeries, mermaids, giants, kings and more. Some children came to school dressed in the colours of St Piran’s flag.

As well as dressing up, the children at Manaccan School enjoyed some activities based on the Cornish theme. They made scones which were sold at the end of the day to raise money for school funds. They also created a map of Cornwall decorated with all things Cornish and drew Celtic knots whilst listening to Trelawny.

Finally they learnt about the story of St Piran and St Michael’s Mount as well as the origins of the Cornish flag.

At Grade Ruan School the children had a visit from local authors Jenny Scolding and Andre Ellis, who came in to share their Cornish books with the key stage two children.

They explained the processes that are involved when publishing a book and the editing that takes place when writing your own book. The school gave a “huge thank you” to Jenny and Andre for their contribution to World Book Day.

At lunchtime, the children enjoyed pasties as part of their Cornish themed day.

At Nansloe Academy the theme was books by Julia Donaldson and children and staff were invited to come dressed as a characters in her books.

They entered the school through a magical woodland featured in the Gruffalo’s Child and then wandered around the trees to experience the “snow” for themselves.

The whole day was themed, with children taking part in up to six activities based around different books by the author.

Children from Landewednack School and the adjoining Little Lizards Children’s Centre at The Lizard dressed as their favourite book character, with Harry Potter, Horrid Henry and Willy Wonka just some of those out in force during the day.

The children also brought a book of their own into school that they had read and no longer wanted, in preparation for a book swapping afternoon due to take place at the school this week.
