Fire crews worked overnight from Saturday to Sunday tackling a blaze on a thatched roof in St Newlyn East, near Newquay.

Crews from Newquay, Perranporth and St. Columb were called just after 8.30pm on Saturday night and on arrival more were called from Truro and St. Dennis, with six fire engines and a total of 50 personnel in attendance.

A fire service spokesperson said: "The roof of the property measuring eight metres by four metres was well alight, crews used a main jet and two high pressure hosereels and proceeded to undertake salvage at the scene.

"The incident command unit from Falmouth, the breathing support unit from St. Austell, the welfare vehicle from St. Dennis also the fire emergency support vehicle from Falmouth were also in attendance."

At around 9.30pm the fire has now broke through the roof into the main building, with crews cutting away thatch from the roof, and at 11pm the it had spread to the first floor of the property, with teams of firefighters wearing breathing apparatus using main jets and high pressure hosereel jets, while Western Power isolated power to the property.

Firefighting efforts were scaled down after midnight, and only three engines were still at the scene, with relief crews taking over from Polruan, St. Austell and Bodmin, and damping down continued until past 7am on Sunday morning.
