Peacock’s Lane in Helston has finally been resurfaced, following a year-and-a-half of wrangles at the town council.

The walkway from Coinagehall Street to the town centre car park had been the subject of much debate over the past year as the council tried to find an owner who could give permission for it to be resurfaced, with Councillor John Martin offering to take ownership at one point.

However, at the end of last year, the council took on “general power of competence” which allowed them to go ahead with the work despite being unable to find the owner, and on March 25 the lane was given a smooth new surface.

Amanda Boxer, the project assistant to the town manager, said: “It’s done, and it’s now even.

“We’re very, very pleased, and hopefully it will make it safer and more pleasant for walking from the car parks into the town. They are coming back to tidy up the edges and put in the finishing touches.

“We’re planning a tidy up. The town tidy team are going to make the scrub and the weeds disappear.”

The team is also looking into fitting lighting for the walkway, although permission is needed from the board of Peacock’s, which runs the shop next to the lane, and the council would still have to draw up a legal easement with the company.

As there is no power supply for lighting on the lane, the team is considering a solar powered LED option.

The town council is expecting an update on the situation at its next meeting tomorrow evening (April 16).
