Following a 559 per cent increase in voter registration in Glasney Student Village at the Penryn Campus, student voters turned out in high numbers to cast their ballots in last Thursday’s General Election.

This was the culmination of the Falmouth and Exeter Students’ Union (FXU) My Vote Matters campaign, which has been running for over a year with the aim of engaging students in politics and encouraging them to realise that their vote really does matter, especially in such marginal seats.

Approximately 1,435 students registered to vote in recent drives and the polling station at the Penryn campus, meant it was easier than ever before for them to vote. On polling day, student voters were encouraged to contribute to the "Why I'm voting wall" located near the polling station - many wrote that they felt voting was a responsibility they shared with their community.

On polling day the FXU minibus ferried approximately 200 students to polling stations across the two constituencies, as well as provided ‘Find Your Polling Station’ maps across both campuses. FXU staff and volunteers roamed around both campuses including Glasney Student Village, and roads with high levels of student occupancy to encourage students to vote and make sure they were fully informed.
