Flushing School has been celebrating after being rated good in a recent Ofsted inspection.

The pupils from the school marked the new ranking - a step up from its 2013 ranking of 'needs improvement' - by heading to the beach and building the word 'good' out of sand on Trefusis Beach.

Head teacher Mark French welcomed the report which highlighted "so many positive features" including teaching that is "consistently good and sometimes exemplary."

He said: "This is a school that welcomes and involves everyone. Staff are rightly proud of their strong teamwork and positive relationships with all pupils which serve to promote the shared values.

"Pupils enthusiastically engage in their work and are eager to do well, regardless of the tasks or subjects.

"We will now be working hard to address the two improvement points and achieve outstanding next time round."

He thanked staff, pupils, parents, volunteers, members of the community and school governors, and added: "This is a real community school and the outcome of the report belongs to us all."

Robert Hurrell, chair of governors, said: "This 'good' judgement is richly deserved by Mr French and his staff and I congratulate all involved in achieving this grade.

"Under Mr French’s leadership the school has embraced many changes with enthusiasm; this has been driven by the determination to provide the very best possible teaching and learning opportunities for all the pupils, without losing sight of the caring and supportive ethos that makes our learning environment so rich.

"We will not be complacent but continue to share a constant desire for improvement and head towards becoming 'outstanding.'"
