THE children of the Crypt Pre-School in Falmouth made party hats and tucked into a buffet of cakes, crisps, fruit and biscuits to celebrate the facility being branded outstanding following an Ofsted inspection.

The pre-school, which has 43 children on its register, had previously had a "good" rating following an inspection, so staff, parents and volunteers are delighted to have done even better this time. Manager, Theresa Tuffery said: "We are elated by our latest inspection. Our last inspection was in 2010 and the staff, committee and parents have all since then helped us to make improvements to achieve our outstanding grading. It was a goal we were all working towards."

Ofsted inspector, Jayne Pascoe, said in her report: "Staff use highly effective teaching methods to successfully promote children's learning and development. Children are very inquisitive, curious and keen to learn.

"Children's communication and language skills are exceptionally good. They express themselves capably and clearly, demonstrating an extensive vocabulary. The manager and the staff team are exceptionally skilled. All are extremely confident and competent in their role and understand their responsibilities. The committee are very supportive and take an active role in the day-to-day operation of the pre-school provision."

Special guest at Wednesday's party was Alex Pascoe, a children's centre teacher with Cornwall Council, who has worked with the Crypt Pre-school for about six years. said: "I am thrilled that they have achieved outstanding status. It is very well deserved, they have worked really hard."
