Ruan Minor Recreation Ground lived up to its title over the bank holiday weekend by hosting a three day festival of live music, gymnastics, fire breathing, Punch and Judy, along with barbecues, beer and rum punch.

Blessed with brilliant weather and attended by many families, the festival has been hailed as an "absolute success" by organisers. Fire eater, escape artist and trickster, Simon Bradley, performed a show that had audiences both wowed and on edge with suspense as he put people in the guillotine. With relief, they all walked off to tell the tale, most likely at the bar.

To celebrate the long weekend there was live music on the Saturday and Sunday from Sonny, The Suspects and Bushfield Smith. While the Monday saw face painting, a dog show, Punch and Judy and a gymnastic display.

Grade Ruan Recreation Ground secretary, Moira Hurst, said: “It went fantastically well, we had very good weather. It was absolutely great and everyone had a good time. Loads of people turned up and we made loads of money, so it was an absolute success.

“We had a fantastic Punch and Judy show, and the kids really loved that. We had lots of bouncy castles. There was actually a bit of a mix up and we ended up with more bouncy castles than we originally intended, and they all looked great. We had a dog show, which was for the children and it was so good to see them all walking the circle with their dogs.”

This year the event raised around £2,000, which will go on maintaining the recreation ground, on new equipment and on replacing an old hut.
