Visitors should now be able to find their way around Helston with great ease, and learn about local visitor attractions, after the town's new map boards were unveiled on Tuesday.

The boards have been installed to help first time visitors with directions to the town centre and its diverse range of local shops and services, as well as providing information about attractions such as the town trail, the museum, Coronation Park and its boating lake, and the Penrose estate, and not forgetting Flora Day.

The maps are an adapted version of the illustrated town map created by local artist Hermione Mills with graphic design by local designer Rose Robinson.

The chair of the Public Realm Project Board, Councillor Nicola Boase, said: "I am really pleased to see that the distinctive new map boards are now in place to help visitors with wayfinding and information. This project has demonstrated the value of local organisations working together for the benefit of the town."

Shirley Moralee, BID development officer at Helston Business Improvement Partnership, added: "The HBIP are delighted to have been involved in the project working with other partners in the town, to provide much needed information for visitors to our town."

The six boards, which are situated at the Fairground, Old Cattle Market, Town Centre and Tyacke Road car parks as well as the Guildhall and in Horse and Jockey Lane were manufactured, printed and installed by Cornwall-based Parc Signs at a cost of £6,750, and will be maintained by the town council.

The project was developed and funded by a partnership of local organisations including South Kerrier Heritage Trust (Helston Museum), South Kerrier Alliance, Helston Business Improvement Partnership, the National Trust and Helston Town Council, aided by landscape architects MeiLoci.

David Turnbull, trustee of South Kerrier Alliance and South Kerrier Heritage Trust (Helston Museum) said: "This has been a very worthwhile community project which presents Helston really well. The map design is fantastic and should be a real benefit to all of the Town’s visitors."
