The organiser of a charity day in memory of PC Andy Hocking says he believes he has raised enough for at least one, if not two, lifesaving defibrillators for Falmouth.

Darren Averris, who organised a recent tag rugby and family fun day with Mike Keverne, has said the current total from the weekend stands at £1,630, with still more expected to come.

The event at Penryn Rugby Club ran from 1pm on Saturday, with the centrepiece rugby match kicking off at 3pm, but there were plenty of other attractions to draw in around £250 visitors, including sumo-suits, a tug of war, face and glitter painting and live music, with many of the stall holders making extra donations to the cause.

Darren said: "It went very well, we've raised £1,630 which is fantastic. The weather was fantastic, I couldn't tell how many people turned up exactly, people were coming and going."

He added: "At the end of the day people volunteered their services, didn't charge us anything, because it was a charity day."

He organised the event to raise money for a defibrillator for Falmouth, where PC Hocking was a well-known face on his beat before his sudden and unexpected death in March this year, as well as to collect funds for the British Heart Foundation (BHF).

But with the BHF offering to pay up to £400 towards a new defibrillator, and able to supply the machines for around £1,000 each, Darren said. "we might even be able to get two."

He added that he plans to repeat the event next year, but slightly differently, with a sports tournament, but still in memory of Andy Hocking.
