Top students about to start their GCSEs at Penryn College pondered possible careers including fighting for their country, creating superyachts or preserving the countryside at a recent careers evening.

Chilren in year nine at the college attended the recent able pupils careers evening, aimed at providing extra support for the most able students, which saw representatives from various local businesses, colleges and services attend.

One of the key moments as the pupils make the step up from Key Stage 3 to Key Stage 4, is to select their options for their GCSEs, so it was a perfect opportunity to look at options beyond Penryn College, when those GCSEs are completed in a few years’ time.

Deputy head teacher Paul Walker was pleased with how the evening went, and said: “It was a really great night, with a fantastic atmosphere and buzz around the college.”

He added: “We had great feedback from parents and pupils, and it’s great to see that the night was so informative and useful in helping inspire our students for the future.”

Pupils and parents met with representatives, from the army, navy and RAF as well as local further education providers such as Truro and Penwith College, Cornwall College, Falmouth Sixth Form, Falmouth University and Exeter University, and guests including a local architect, a graphics designer, Hine Downing Solicitors, Pendennis Shipyard, Natural England, and Unlocking Cornish Potential.
