Penryn residents need to dust off their glad rags and their walking shoes as Penryn Week approaches with its usual packed schedule.

This year's programme, running from Monday, July 13, to Sunday, July 19, contains treats old and new, including dancing, fashion, plenty of history walks, and beating the bounds with the mayor, all culminating in the grand finale of the Penryn Carnival on Saturday, July 18.

The week opens on Monday with a tea dance in the temperance hall at 2pm, knitting in the methodist church, and a children's sports day on College Field at 6.30pm.

On Tuesday Dave's All Occasion Cakes will be holding a make and take workshop from 10am to noon, and at 7.30pm there will be a talk on the Prayer Book Rebellion in the town hall.

Wednesday will feature community bingo in the Temperance Hall at 6.30pm, a service of 101 Voices for 101 Years at the methodist church at 7.15pm, and at 7.30pm a euchre drive at the Buffs club and a quiz at Penryn Athletic Football Club.

Events on Thursday include two history talks in the town hall, one by local historian John Kirby on ancient Egypt and one by FXU scholar Catherine Thornhill on Glasney College, and at 7.30pm there will be a fashion show in the temperance hall.

The highlight of Saturday will undoubtedly be the carnival, which will wend its way from the football club at 6.30pm, featuring the mayor and mayoress, this year's fairy king and queen, Falmouth Marine Band and Lanner and District Silver Band, and various community groups.

Before that Penryn Primary Academy will hold its summer fair from 11am to 1pm, while there will be bingo in the temperance hall from 1pm.

Throughout the week there will be several walks, all meeting at the town hall. There will be a heritage walk at 2pm on Tuesday, commemorating 750 years since the founding of Glasney College, a history walk on Friday at 7pm covering the Summercourt area of Penryn and finishing at the Famous Barrel.

Then on Sunday the mayor will be resurrecting the beating of the bounds from 2pm, trekking the perimeter of the town from St Thomas Street to the reservoirs and finishing with cream teas in the town hall at 4.30pm.

The final event of the week will be a songs of praise service at 6pm on Exchequer Quay with Breage Silver Band and the lifeboat.

Councillor Mary May is looking for models for the fashion show, and anyone who is interested should call her on 01326 377390 or the town council office on 01326 373086.
