NEW champions were crowned at Penryn College’s sports day last week, on what was an "exciting and unpredictable" day of competition.

The spirit of teamwork was a theme throughout, with everyone chipping in to help their house gain points in their events in the morning, before coming together as a team in the afternoon.

Every student had the chance to take part and represent their house. Students in years seven, eight, nine and ten, took part in mini competitions in football, rugby, cricket, netball, rounders, table tennis, badminton and even a triathlon. Some even had the chance to go to Mount Hawke Skate Park to skateboard, long-board and ride scooters. It was a competitive morning, with members of staff even getting involved to earn crucial points for their houses.

The School Charity Prefects did a "fantastic job" on the day away from the competition, raising £217 for the school charity, Mercy Ships. The team sold drinks and ice lollies, as well as home-grown strawberries to students during lunchtime and the afternoon. They also sold wristbands, each with the colour of one of the school houses, in the week building up to sports day which students bought to support their team.

The afternoon track session is not only a highlight of sports day, but one of the highlights across the whole school calendar. With the sun shining and the music blaring, a fantastic atmosphere created a wall of noise for the athletes competing in the 100, 200, 400, 800m and relay races, as they were roared home by their peers (and some of the more enthusiastic members of staff).

Pendennis went into the day as champions desperate to retain their crown, but despite a strong showing in the morning, Arwenack came from nowhere like a bolt from the blue to be crowned as new champions.
