FALMOUTH Marine School will be opening its doors to the public on Saturday as it celebrates the near completion of a £3.6 million refurbishment programme which will provide state-of-the-art marine sector training facilities for students and local employers.

Visitors attending the free community open day between 11am and 3pm, will be able to explore the brand new buildings and take part in a number of activities. There will be an chance to feed the piranhas, build a canoe, hoist a sail, meet the sharks, service an engine, clean-up an oil spill, try a windsurf simulation and enjoy refreshments in the new café.

Course information on boatbuilding, marine biology, marine engineering and watersports, and expert lecturers will also be on hand all day for those interested in pursuing a career in marine studies.

Phase one of the refurbishment is complete and includes cutting edge marine engineering workshops, a commercial engine room and redesigned marine biology laboratories and classrooms.

Work on phase two has started and includes an open plan Students’ Union, work stations, a new café with integrated library and installation of a lift for disabled access. The final phase sees the replacement of the Trelawney Road wing with a more accessible entrance and parking.
