Porthleven School hosted thousands of people on the weekend as people travelled across the region, some from as far as London, to take part in Southerly Point’s celebration of the Armed Forces, held there on Saturday.

Six months in the making, the afternoon has been hailed as “brilliant” and “magical” by organiser Leigh Yates, who, along with co-organiser Susan Davis liaised with RNAS Culdrose and managed to bring an impressive amount of community groups together for the day.

The Army, the Royal Navy, the RAF, army cadets, sea cadets, local businesses - many of whom sponsored the event - Help for Heroes, Lions Club, Watermen Retreat School and Helston WI were all there, among others, running stalls, workshops and entertainments, and contributing towards the day's success.

Leigh said: “It was magnificent, it exceeded my expectations. We had over 2,000 people come through over the day - it ticked all the boxes. It was amazing to see so many people from different communities coming together and celebrating what the armed forces do for us.”

Due to the variety of entertainments there was something for all ages. Young children were able to move freely between climbing inside stationary army helicopters to then have their face painted.

While the older folk were able to enjoy the 1940s classics sung by sweet heart singer, Sandy Sparkle, and the folk songs by Cornish singer song-writer, Louella-Jade Eke.

“The main thing was to salute our troops of the past, present and future,” said Leigh. "I would like to give a special thanks to John Walsh, Captain, Ade Orchard, and Commander Fitter.”
