THE Rotary Club of Penryn held its annual President’s Evening at the Merchants Manor in Falmouth when Ann Congdon presided over proceedings.

Guests of honour were Ian Parker from the Literacy in a Box Rotary charity, and the Mayor and Mayoress of Penryn, Mark and Diane Snowdon.

The evening began with a performance by three young flautists from Penryn College, and this was followed by the Penryn College Youth Speaks team who were sponsored by Penryn Rotary Club in the National Youth Speaks competition in February.

At the end of their talk Mr Parker was presented with a cheque for £600 which had been collected by Penryn College's Interact Club at an enterprise fair held in the college during June. This was followed by a meal and a humorous speech from Mr Snowdon.

On thanking the mayor, president Ann presented him with a bell which the club has donated to Penryn Council for the new Town Crier.

Finally Mr Parker gave a talk about the Literacy in a Box campaign, which sends educational boxes to schools in Zambia. His talk centred around Penryn Club and Penryn College’s Interact Club who raised enough money to buy ten boxes, each box costing £295. During the vote of thanks, Jim Henderson, Rotary Youth chair, gave Mr Parker two big bags full of polo shirts and jumpers for African school children, which had been donated by pupils at Penryn Primary Academy.
