AFTER almost 22 years of voluntary work, Brian Phillpotts, one of the founding members and "head gardener" of the Friends of Penmere Station in Falmouth, is finally hanging up his secateurs.

Brian's wealth of knowledge was pivotal in the early years, ensuring that the small group of gardening and railway enthusiasts, who came together in 1993, put plants and laid flowerbeds in the correct position, and filled with them with the right amount of colour so they flowered at the right time.

Together with Brian's many contacts, as a lifelong and well known "Falmouth boy," this meant that over the years the friends have received numerous donations of plants, shrubs and flowers from many people.

To acknowledge Brian's commitment and enthusiasm and to thank him, the Friends made Brian an "Honorary President" of the small station group, and surprised him with a suitably framed certificate on the platform earlier this month. (July)

"Brian will still be involved with the volunteers, as chief fundraiser, and will still be seen at Penmere on the platform on working afternoons," said Steve Lloyd. "I am sure he will be keeping an expert eye out to make sure everything planted is put in a suitable place."
