Falmouth has been awarded £10,000 of government funding to develop plans for improvements to the town's coastal area from Swanpool to Greenbank.

The Falmouth First Community Interest Company (CIC) was behind the bid for the initial funding and will now be working with a team made up of representatives from the public and private sectors to come up with plans ahead of bidding for a further £50,000.

The money has come from the Department for Communities and Local Government and has been awarded to support regeneration projects in the area.

Jonathan Griffin of the CIC said: "We will now come up with an action plan of what we want to do. We will see what needs doing from Swanpool to Greenbank, whether it's putting in new seating along Gyllyngvase or a shelter for people to sit and look at the sea or replacing railings, so we know what to do with the money that might be available. This £10,000 is enabling money."

The team pulling all the ideas together will include members of the CIC, Falmouth Town Council, Falmouth Harbour Commissioners, Falmouth Hotels Association, the Maritime Museum, Cornwall Council, Falmouth Bay Residents' Association, Falmouth BID and A&P Falmouth.

Julian German, Cornwall Council cabinet member for economy and culture said of the initial £10,000 award: “Coastal communities are an essential element of our local economy and there is a strong community resolve in them as everyone works together to improve their area. I am delighted their efforts have been recognised in this manner.”

Fifteen towns across the county have been awarded £10,000 and all will now be eligible to bid for up to a £50,000 share of a £3million Coastal Revival Fund which provides assistance to coastal community efforts to improve their local economy.
