A Falmouth lifeboat crew rescued two holidaymakers after their hire boat became stuck in mud in the Percuil River on Saturday, July 25.

The inshore lifeboat was called away from the St Mawes Boat Show at around 2pm, and worked up the river before finding the hire boat on a mud bank in Trethem Creek, where it had been stranded by a fast ebb tide.

Two RNLI volunteers entered the water and made their way across to the boat where they found two people unharmed but cold, and with another three hours to low water it was decided to get them to shore.

An RNLI spokesperson said: "Due to the nature of the soft mud and being over 30 metres from the shoreline the Falmouth Coastguard Cliff Rescue Team were requested with their specialist mud rescue equipment. Portscatho Cliff Rescue Team was also tasked to assist.

"One of the lifeboat crew remained with the casualties while the other one returned to the Inshore Lifeboat to assist as required."

The teams arrived at 3.40pm and had everyone ashore just after 4pm.

The spokesperson added: "This rescue was a great example of team work between the coastguard teams and the inshore lifeboat. Special thanks also should go to the King Harry Ferry for the rapid way in which they got the Falmouth cliff team’s vehicles across the River Fal on a very busy summer’s day."
