Helston Town Council has agreed to the siting of a World War One memorial bench and talking post to be sited near Trengrouse Way toilets.

The proposal from Councillor Martine Knight would see the placing of a bench, with a tableau depicting a scene from World War One on the back of the seat, at the site of a mini-arboretum on Trengrouse Way, where five birch trees and poppies were planted last year in memory of Helston's fallen.

A talking post would also be installed near to the bench, which would provide visitors with information on the town during the war.

Funding for the bench has already been agreed by Cornwall Council, and Councillor Knight told the council that the talking post would require no cost once installed, as it would be powered by users.

She said: "It's a post powered someone pushing a pedal and there's a pre-recorded USB inside that gives people information," adding, "the only working part is something that resembles a bike chain."

When asked about community involvement in the project, Councillor Knight said that Helston residents would be asked to get involved with the design, and added that this was a condition of the project getting Heritage Lottery funding.

The council also agreed to release £2,000 budgeted for the commemoration of World War One to the Helston World War One Heritage Project, to allow it to organise events for the town.
