Job seekers in Helston will be invited to take part in a Dragon's Den style competition next month with the aims of winning investment capital and gaining skills.

The event, Big Up Helston and Lizard (Big Up Hal) will see small teams of job seekers working in teams with business and community representatives on a pilot project for the group Helston and Lizard Works (HaL), including a presentation to a panel of 'dragons,’ with the chance to win £300 for a community project.

The event takes place between 10am and 4.15pm on Monday, September 21, at the Light and Life Building, in Water-ma-Trout.

Mike Thomas, Helston’s mayor, said: “The basic goal of the Big Up Hal day is for the community to come together to create ideas to big up HaL. Participants will meet local employer; learn how to develop ideas from concepts to working models and to help to support the community across a range of areas.”

The project is supported by Jobcentre Plus via Helston and the Lizard Works and it is estimated about 50 people will take part, with job seekers developing CV skills including improved communication, teamworking and leadership, project management, community culture and technical skills from industry experts in digital media, print, IT, design and PR.

Each participant will be handed a Helston and the Lizard Works “passport to success” and earn stamps through the day for each skill attained.
