Falmouth's mayor was to be found on Wednesday morning posing for the cameras at Grove Place public toilets.

Mayor John Body was at the conveniences near Events Square to launch South West Water's new Love Your Loo campaign, aimed at flushing out bad habits amongst the company's customers.

The new campaign will be educating people on what is and isn't suitable to be disposed of in toilets, concentrating on the 'three Ps' - pee, poo and paper, which can be flushed, while everything else should go in a bin.

The company rolled out the red carpet at Grove Place from 10am, giving visitors a "VIP toilet experience" at the county's busiest public lavatories.

Becky Moran, from South West Water, said: "This is just a fun way to hopefully get the three Ps message across to as many people as possible.

"We will be here from 10am to 4pm talking to people about what should be flushed and what shouldn't be flushed.

"We want to reduce the number of blockages caused by people flushing things. I don't think people are flushing these things deliberately. People don't realise that though the packaging might say flushable and biodegradable, things take so much longer to break down that they cause blockages in pipes."

The mayor said: "Having worked for South West Water for over 20 years I have first hand experience of the problems caused by the wrong items being flushed down toilets.

"Not only the distress caused to private homes and businesses by being flooded but the massive cost of repairing pumps and equipment.

"I hope everybody takes on board the Love Your Loo campaign and only flushes the three Ps."

South West Water hope the campaign will make people think twice about flushing baby wipes, hygiene wipes, moist toilet tissue (from a package), cleaning wipes, cleansing pads and sanitary products, which contributes to 8,500 blocked sewers the company deals with every year at a cost of £4.5million, driving up water bills.
