Shipwreck explorers who had been diving in Porthallow Bay had to be rescued by Falmouth RNLI after their boat broke down on Saturday afternoon.

The diving club members had been visiting the wreck of the Volnay when their engine had failed and, with their VHF radio not working, had called Falmouth Coastguard for help.

The lifeboat was launched around 1.30pm to rescue the five and a half metre rigid inflatable with four people on board, upon arrival a tow line was passed to the boat and once it had recovered its anchor it was towed back to Falmouth where it was safely secured at the Grove Place Dinghy Park slipway.

An RNLI spokesperson said: "The coastguard had made a VHF broadcast to all vessels requesting assistance with a tow but with no vessels in the immediate area they launched the inshore lifeboat to assist.

"Once the lifeboat was underway a passing fishing boat had confirmed the exact location of the casualty."
