The Cambridge University Gilbert & Sullivan Society's are presenting The Sorcerer at the Minack Theatre from September 7 to 12.
The Sorcerer is the first full-length opera written by Gilbert & Sullivan, whose success propelled such later collaborations as HMS Pinafore and Pirates of Penzance. The story is about a young man, Alexis, who is obsessed with the idea of love levelling all ranks. He invites a sorcerer, the famed John Wellington Wells, to brew a love potion which causes everyone in the village to fall in love with the first person they see. This ensures pairing of comically mismatched couples and special solutions to resolve a tricky plot to be staged at the Minack.
Cambridge students have been putting on high quality Gilbert & Sullivan opera at the Minack for more than 50 years. HMS Pinafore, which they put on last year, was a full-house run.
